strikes like a man-eating shark, indeed

Isn't this the best poster? I wish they still made ones like this. So, it turns out that I have pneumonia. And all I feel like doing is lying in bed, watching Murder, She Wrote on Netflix. (Which is, as you may have guessed, not my usual modus operandi. But lying perfectly still and breathing in just the right way keeps the coughing fits down.) I am falling in love with Angela Lansbury (well, Jessica Fletcher, really) and especially Cabot Cove, her sweet little hometown (which is, ahem, much like mine.) Did you know that Angela Lansbury is 86? And she did a movie this year? What a neat lady. Should you need to cuddle up and watch an episode (or several), my absolute favourite so far is Season 2, Episode 10: Sticks and Stones. I love all of the little house scenes. And Jessica's green phone! I think I'm going to order one on Etsy for the boys for Christmas for their 'store'.

So if I owe you an e-mail or a blog post (sorry, Mad - I'll try to get to it soon) I'll get to it. But right now I'm going to start another episode while Adam's gone to pick up the boys at my Mom's and to get my new antibiotics. I don't like taking them, but it's definitely preferable to this!

  1. Oh gosh, don't worry about me! You get better. You're the second person I know this week to have pneumonia!

Well, this is tragic on two levels:
    1) you are sick, and this is obviously yucky, and
    2) because you are sick, you think it is 1984, and have just discovered a brand new, awesome television show.

Wait. Do you know I'm poking fun at you? You are, after all, sick. You can still understand sarcasm and stuff, right? I don't know if Angela Lansbury is ever sarcastic. She probably wouldn't make fun of you. She'd probably make tea and rub your head...

Have fun vacationing in Cabot Cove! (Rest, rest, rest...)

  3. Thanks, Mad! I'm hoping to be a bit more motivated in a couple of days when these new antibiotics kick in.

Movita(Rachael), (that's how I think of your name now) - Adam and I have been laughing at 'mental confusion' being one of the things we should watch for. He's judging my competence by my ability to pick out the murderer by 1/3 of the way through each episode. So far, so good. She would absolutely make tea and probably a mustard poultice, too.

  4. Well, I hope you get to feeling better!

I'm your newest blog follower all the way from Austin,TX =)

I actually found you by accident while reading an online soap tutorial on how to make loofah soap bars (I have some loofahs growing in my garden and thought it might be a nice Christmas craft to do with the children in my Forest Kindergarten [starting to re-think on that one though, not sure how dangerous/caustic the soap mix is]). Anyway, so I clicked through to your Birch Bark Soap site from the tutorial for the recipe for the soap mix but I couldn't find it. Incidentally, do you have a good recipe for me to use to make those? I still want to do it, just not with the kids (unless it's all harmless).

Anyway, I somehow found a link to this blog through that one (I have no idea how, probably stumbled upon a food recipe--such a sucker, ha!). But I'm so grateful I found your blog. It's very inspiring. I love the simplicity of your pictures and I also LOVE to bake so can't wait to try all these wonderful recipes. On the top of my list is the hamburger bun recipe. I've tried many and never found one I liked. Looking forward to portabello mushroom burgers this weekend...

I also thought it was funny, I noticed you had my favorite Nourishing Traditions cookbook on your shelf in one of your pics. Really great book!

Well, rest up and I'll be reading up on some of your older posts looking for more recipes :)

    Thanks for the wonderful blog!

I hope you feel a little bit better Sherrie. Dave love's Murder she Wrote and he's always trying to figure out who the murderer is. Vickie

  6. Thanks, Vickie! Is Dave pretty good at getting it right? I'm decent, but nit perfect.:)

Hi Janine, and welcome! I had posted a loofah soap tutorial on my separate soap blog. I migrated all of the posts over here, but I can't seem to find that one - strange. I'll keep looking. Essentially, I use my same cold process recipe, but bring it to a very thin trace, and pour it into lined PVC pipe which has the loofah in it already. You need to jiggle it quite a bit to make sure that the soap
permeates the loofah. Let it sit for at least 3 or 4 days before cutting - that makes it much easier, and you'll need to use a sharp knife. I hope that's helpful! I would not do it with kids, because of the lye in the raw soap. It's super cool that you can grow loofah there, though!
I think you will be thrilled withnTeresa's bun recipe. We just made some more the other day, and they have been perfect every time. Watch the baking time, though- ours bake up pretty quickly. I haven't had mushroom burgers in a long time (Adam can't eat them) but I love them! I have a marinated recipe that's yummy. You should also try the tarragon chicken slow cooker one. Yum! Thanks so much for stopping by!

  8. Hello. I don't think I've ever commented, but I wanted to say that I love your blog and check in very often and can't get enough. I also wanted to say that parts of the "village" in Murder, She Wrote were filmed where I used to live. Mendocino, Ca. a "village" of 1100 people, that is just about the best place to be on a nice day. If you do an internet search for Mendocino, Ca. you might see some of the places that are in the series. Well, I hope you feel better soon.

  9. Sherrie, that doesn't sound so good, stay in bed and get better! And have fun watching those episodes :) I remember watching Murder She wrote on TV as a kid :)
Hope those antibiotics kick in fast!

  10. Susan, your comment totally made my day! Thanks for commenting, and for introducing me to Mendocino - it is gorgeous! Makes me want to save up for a ticket to California...

Thanks, Kristina - I am starting to feel better today. I think the antibiotics are kicking in nicely. I remember it being on when I was a kid, too; it's fun to imagine that we're back in the 80's. :)

This seems like a bad time of year for you! Last time you came to Halifax you were also quite sick! I hope you are feeling better before Tuesday!!! I would hate to miss our date but getting better is the priority! I also hope it sticks with you and doesn't get into those little bodies.

Enjoy Murder She Wrote (definitely a good show!) and hopefully the sunshine and warmth today will help to clear out your lungs. Alli
